Migración internacional y campesinado cafetalero en México: fases, circuitos y trayectorias migratorias

Resumen
Este artículo presenta la migración de campesinos cafetaleros de Veracruz a Estados Unidos por la boca de sus actores: sus motivos, su recorrido y circuito migratorio, las redes sociales que facilitan el viaje y la inserción allá, su proyecto migratorio y el uso que hacen de sus remesas, su percepción de su experiencia migratoria, etc. El análisis intenta tipificar pautas migratorias diferentes en función de la fase migratoria en que se encuentren las comunidades, la etapa de ciclo vital de la familia, el estatus legal del migrante y el circuito y redes que utiliza. Relaciona el fenómeno migratorio con la crisis cafetalera, y busca dilucidar sus efectos y el de las remesas sobre la viabilidad de las unidades de producción campesina.

Migration and Peasant Coffee Cultivation in Mexico: Phases, Circuits and Migratory Trajectories

Abstract
The article describes the migration of peasant coffee cultivators from the Mexican state of Veracruz to the United States on the basis of direct personal testimonies: their motives, the route taken, the migratory cycle, the social networks that facilitate the journey, how they are incorporated into work in the United States, their migratory project, and the use they make of their remittances, as also the perception of their migratory experience in general. The analysis attempts to typify different migratory patterns according to the particular migratory phase in which the communities find themselves, the individual family’s’ life cycle, the migrant’s legal status, and the route and networks used. It relates the migratory phenomenon to the coffee crisis, and seeks to clarify its effects, as also that of the remittances on the viability of peasant holdings’ production.
